SNOW Meeting Recap – January 20, 2024

Ms  Marion Martell has been involved working with the Community throughout her career. Her focus has been in areas of health, management, business development, sales, coaching, training, communications, and charity work. Marion herself is a Heart Patient Survivor.

In 2008 Marion was diagnosed with Complete Heart Block requiring a Permanent Pacemaker. Thanks to the Heart Institute and all the staff for their great care. She feels great today.

Miriam’s talk focused on the early recognition of symptoms of heart disease and prevention – what you can do and how to advocate for yourself when going for medical help.

Key points:

  • Heart disease in women is on the rise world wide
  • Women’s heart attack symptoms are not recognized 50% of time. Some health care providers may be less aware of differences between women and men in how they experience heart attack symptoms.
  • Women can present with multiple symptoms, including chest pain.
  • Women may have micro-vascular dysfunction that can lead to tearing of large blood vessels to the heart
  • Women may have weakened heart muscles during or after pregnancy, or after menopause.
  • Women need to be their own advocates. This means being clear about explaining symptoms, family history, etc.
  • Passport of Health is a document where most of history can be documented and kept handy in one place.
  • Younger women are stressed and SNOW can be a vehicle to support them and thus help in prevention.
  • Christmas gifts for women and children were delivered to Interval House on 23rd December
  • 20 hats were distributed for the Hats and Mittens for School project.
